Strong finishes at Sprint Worlds, State Road Race, and Disco Tri

Paragon had another athlete compete in a world championship this weekend. Andrew Joy represented the USA as he traveled to Rotterdam, Netherlands to race the ITU Sprint Triathlon World Championship. It was Joy's first time doing a draft-legal triathlon (in his qualifying race in New Orleans in 2016, the swim was cancelled due to strong winds and choppy water, making it a duathlon instead). Joy used his experience from crit racing to fight his way from pack to pack during the bike course. After throwing up in T2, he surprised himself by finishing off the race with a 17:43 5k run split. For Joy, the trip has been "unreal" and an amazing learning experience. Working together and drafting with people from all over the world was a unique opportunity. Joy says, "I've met a lot of nice people on the USA team and from other countries, I'm so happy I was able to come and race." He finished 35th in his age group, and was the 5th American.

The Texas State Road Race kicked up the dust in Ft. Hood for cat races on Saturday and age group races Sunday. Alli Koch and Kennedy Cunningham of UTSA raced the Women's Cat 5 race on Saturday. Koch placed 3rd and Cunningham placed 4th. Anna Kurz raced on Sunday in the age-graded event.

New and old members from the UTSA Triathlon Team competed in the Disco Triathlon on Sunday. Most athletes did the Olympic distance, and one new member finished his first sprint tri. The team traveled up to Ray Roberts Lake State Park and spent the weekend camping, having fun, and preparing for the triathlon. The team had great performances overall, and we are waiting on results to see if they won the combined collegiate points. Max Jarvie was the first guy to finish of the team, in 6th place. He was followed by Evan Landez and Ivan Cisneros. Alli Koch finished 1st for the ladies, and Valerie Lozano came in 3rd. Unfortunately, two team members crashed on the bike course. It was a combination of other riders and gravel near transition. Both racers got back up to finish strong, and they are doing fine now. Many new members came out to watch their first triathlon. And we are excited to be helping them on their way to completing one themselves. For most of the team, their first race will be Tri Andy's on October 15.
