I've been thinking about WHY we do endurance sports. Is it because it's fun? Because it's hard? Because we want to be fit? Maybe some mixture of that plus big goals and dreams? Then I saw this comment in TrainingPeaks- "It was challenging But Fun."
That's it.
Enjoy the Challenge
For most of us, it's the challenge that draws us in and gives us a sense of fulfillment and satisfaction. A kind of "do hard things" mentality. Climbing a mountain is a way cooler experience than walking around the block despite both involving walking. Why? Because it's super hard and it's super beautiful! That's what I love about sport and if there is one lesson I want for all our athletes to buy into, it's that philosophy.
Enjoy the challenge. Explore the world through sport. Embrace the tough days, the hard workouts, the fatigue. There is no progress in comfort.
You don't need to be chronically tired or beat down 365 days a year. You don't even need sport for that. Life can do that on its own! But remember to be grateful when training does get hard. The reward for work is more work.
Winter is Coming
As winter looms there are going to be some cold, brutal, and dark challenges ahead. Devin Sullivan and Michael Neugebauer got their taste on their 300 mile cycling adventure this past summer! I don't advise anyone else to do something quite so extreme but I would encourage you to enjoy whatever challenges you encounter in the new year. Even if it's just 15 minutes of Foundations Training in the living room.
